Visit to the Treasurer's Office

On Tuesday, I made a trip to the State Capitol in Little Rock.

State Capitol, picture taken last year

You can take self-guided tours, and so I grabbed a brochure and started the tour.  On the second floor is where the State Treasurer's Office is located, and in that office is a safe.  However, the picture in the tour brochure was that of the bronze doors that are on the front side of the building.  Being slightly confused, a lady in the treasury pointed out the safe and asked another man that worked there if he would give a tour.  He kindly obliged, and gave some history on the safe.

It is a walk-in safe, and has been at the capitol since 1912.  The doors on the safe weigh 11 tons.  Railroad tracks had to be built into the 2nd floor so that the doors could actually get into the building, and that story was built around the safe.  At any given time, they keep up to $400,000 locked up.  Oh--this was interesting, too:  The vault is closed at 3 o'clock everyday and it's put on a timer.  A 16-hour timer.  There is no getting in, or out, once the vault is closed, until the next day.

This was me with $200,000!!  How neat?!
